Farrenc was the first female professor at the Paris Conservatory and a highly successful and renowned composer, virtuoso pianist, publisher, and editor, well-known and respected in her time in spite of the many barriers she and her fellow women artists faced.

The New England Brass Band: The British Tradition
In the 19th and 20th centuries, nearly every colliery, or coal mine, in the U.K. had a brass band. They kept workers out of trouble, and were a matter of civic pride for local communities. The 1996 film Brassed Off, starring Ewan McGregor and Pete Postlethwaite, depicts one band’s struggle to stay alive.
